Yaki naran (Atalantia ceylanica) leaves used in herbal
porridges in Sri Lankan food culture. These leaves are rich with many bioactive

02. Pawatta / Malabar nut
Justicia adhatoda
Pawatta (Justicia adhatoda) mainly used as herbal tea in Sri Lanka. It contained a lot of medicinal properties and some studies ware done with its Page 7 of 15 medicinal properties identification. The leaves contained deoxyvasicine, essential oil, alkaloids quinazoline, vasicine, vasicinone and bioflavonoids. These compounds have respiratory stimulant activities. Vasicine in low concentrations, induced bronchodilation and relaxation of the tracheal muscle (Gulfraz et al., 1990). Pawatta leaves containing high antidiabetic activities. Some studies conducted using rats to measure those antidiabetic properties (Gulfraz et al., 2011). Also, Pawatta used in Ayurvedic medicine to treat Coughs, Asthma, Tuberculosis, Swellings, Eczema, Fevers, Menorrhagia, Dysentery, Urinary tract problems, Gastritis and Nausea conditions (Ayurvedic Plants of Sri Lanka: Plants Details) (Ganegoda, G.V.C.S.
